Iraq To Add Turk men On The New Banknotes
What stirred most of the foreign investors and Iraqi business sectors was the surprising announcement of Baghdad news just last August 2, 2012. CBI just couldn’t get enough with surprises on the new currency that they are planning to add Turkmen on it, could they? How will this affect the integrity of the new currency and what does Turkmen have to do with Iraq?
During a meeting held between Central Bank of Iraq officials and some of the members of Finance Committee last August 2, 2012, CBI announced that Turkmen shall be added on the new notes. This can be stressed when MP Hassan Auzmn, a member of the Finance Committee, released a statement in Kurdish news saying, “The approval of Board of Directors of Central Bank of Iraq was based on the proposal and in consultation with scholars and historians, the Turkmen. Intellectuals and historians Turkmen agreed to put image of the Blue Dome, which is now in the castle of Kirkuk, on Iraq’s new currency to be issued next year.” Well, consulting the historians and credible scholars is not such a bad idea after all considering that the new notes should have remarkable landmarks on them.
But, why add Turkmen?
Why add another language when it was already agreed that the new notes will have three languages? If we base our analysis from the historians’ and scholars’ point of view, it is quite reasonable to add Turkmen as one of the languages on the new notes. This is because there are already more than two million Turkomans who have dwelt in Iraq since the beginning of the 7th century AD. That’s more than 20 years in mathematical calculation. Just in the city of Baghdad alone, there is already an estimate of 300,000 Turkoman populations.
In a citizen’s point of view, this is quite amusing since the government is already considering all types of peoples in the vicinity of Iraq. There has never been a phenomenon in the government of Iraq like this for more than 20 years. Does the government of Iraq ‘indirectly’ giving a message to its people that it is getting more open minded and concerned?
Does Iraq have the extra time to add this language when according to Al-igaily last August 3, 2012, in the Baghdad AgencyNews, Federal Government ministries and departments are pressed to create the best atmosphere for the implementation of the tariffs on materials and imported goods? Iraq might be doing things in the fastest way possible only to revive their economy.
Does this mean that we will have 4 languages in one currency?
People might connote the new currency as Iraq’s 4 in 1: Four languages in one banknote – Kurdish, Arabic, English and Turkmen. However, will this really give a positive impact on the citizens and the current Iraqi Dinar traders? Won’t this raise confusion? How will the world manage Iraq’s 4 in 1? It is quite obvious that the country, especially the Central Bank of Iraq, is in meticulous preparations before releasing the new currency and producing the budget for 2013 in new banknotes. Well, Iraq can give it a shot besides; it already has enough means to print the new fils.
August 2012 seems to be giving a nice ambiance to Iraq. With the addition of Turkmen on the new notes, Iraq stakeholders speeding up the WTO decisions, the great entrance of Chinese investments in Iraq and its first flight to Kuwait for 22 years, it can be noted that Iraq is far more serious in developing its economic status than ever before. However, how long will it take for Iraq to put the screws down on this new banknote for constructing the revaluation launch.
